Steatocranus gibbiceps
Also known as: Gibbiceps Hump-head, Lesser Blockhead Cichlid
Origin: Congo River rapids
Steatocranus gibbiceps is a close relative of the well-known Hump-head Cichlid, sharing its rapids habitat in the Congo River system. It is distinguished by an even more pronounced pre-orbital (forehead) hump profile and a darker, more heavily mottled grey-brown colouration compared to S. casuarius. Like all Steatocranus, it navigates fast water using short hops rather than sustained swimming.
Aquarium care is essentially identical to S. casuarius — strong water movement, rocky structure, and cave sites for spawning. Pairs are monogamous and devoted parents. S. gibbiceps can be slightly more aggressive towards conspecifics than S. casuarius, so only one pair per tank is recommended unless the system is very large and thoroughly divided.
Well-oxygenated water with moderate hardness and a neutral to slightly acidic pH mirrors the geochemically distinctive Congo rapids water. High flow from a powerhead or strong canister filter outlet is important for long-term health.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15, KH 3–10); very high oxygenation required. Tank: 120 L minimum; large smooth rocks and PVC cave hides with strong powerhead current. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and other meaty foods. Breeding: Cave-spawner with monogamous pair bond; both parents are highly protective of eggs and fry. Compatibility: Pair with fast-moving midwater schooling fish only; no other bottom-dwellers.
