Steatocranus glaber
Also known as: Smooth-scaled Blockhead, Glaber Hump-head Cichlid
Origin: Congo River rapids
Steatocranus glaber is one of the most specialised members of the genus, with a notably reduced scale cover giving the body a smooth, almost naked appearance — an adaptation believed to reduce hydraulic drag against rocky surfaces in fast current. It inhabits some of the most turbulent sections of the Congo River rapids, where few other fish survive.
In the aquarium, S. glaber requires the highest current velocity of any Steatocranus species. It should be considered an advanced fish, not because of water chemistry demands, but because of the engineering required to simulate genuinely fast water movement in a home aquarium. Strong powerheads or circulation pumps creating laminar flow over rocks are essential.
Cave-spawning pair bond behaviour applies as with all genus members. Both parents guard eggs and fry with exceptional dedication. Water must be well-oxygenated and moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15, KH 3–10); very high flow and dissolved oxygen required. Tank: 100 L minimum; smooth large boulders arranged to direct maximum current — powerhead essential. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms; grazes algae and biofilm from rocks naturally. Breeding: Cave-spawner; pairs spawn in rock crevices — very strong parental defence of eggs and fry. Compatibility: Only extremely fast-moving midwater fish that can handle high current; species tank ideal.
