Steatocranus mpozoensis
Also known as: Mpozo Hump-head, Mpozo Blockhead Cichlid
Origin: Mpozo River, lower Congo basin
Steatocranus mpozoensis is endemic to the Mpozo River, a tributary of the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is considerably less common in the hobby than S. casuarius or S. tinanti, making it a genuine collector's find. The mottled grey-brown patterning provides excellent camouflage against the rocky rapids substrate of its native habitat.
Behaviour and care requirements closely follow other Steatocranus: strong water movement, rocky décor, cave-spawning pair bond, and dedicated parental care. The species appears similar in temperament to S. tinanti — firm in territorial defence but generally manageable with appropriate tankmates.
Well-oxygenated, moderately hard water at pH 6.0–7.5 suits this species. Provide large smooth boulders and PVC pipe caves alongside a powerhead generating strong directional flow.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); high oxygenation essential. Tank: 100 L; large smooth rocks, PVC cave hides, and strong powerhead current. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen meaty foods, earthworms; accepts a wide range of foods. Breeding: Cave-spawner with monogamous pair; both parents defend eggs and fry. Compatibility: Fast-moving midwater schooling fish only; no other benthic cichlids.
