Steatocranus tinanti
Also known as: Slender Blockhead, Tinanti's Hump-head Cichlid
Origin: Congo River (lower and middle rapids)
Steatocranus tinanti is found in the lower and middle Congo River rapids and is noticeably more elongated and streamlined than S. casuarius, with a much smaller nuchal hump. This gives it a sleeker appearance that some aquarists find more approachable, while retaining the fascinating bottom-hopping locomotion and devoted parental behaviour characteristic of the genus.
The species is a cavity-spawner forming monogamous pairs. Pairs defend their chosen cave site and surrounding territory against all intruders. Fry are relatively large at free-swimming stage and grow quickly when fed a varied meaty diet.
Strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and moderate hardness at pH 6.0–7.5 are the key water parameters. A tank of at least 100 L with smooth rocks, flat slate, and PVC cave hides provides the structure this rapids-adapted fish needs.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); powerhead-driven high-flow essential. Tank: 100 L; smooth rocks, PVC caves, and strong directional current. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and shrimp. Breeding: Cave-spawner forming monogamous pair bond; both parents guard fry. Compatibility: Pair with active midwater fish; avoid other bottom-dwelling cichlids.
