Steatocranus ubanguiensis
Also known as: Ubangi Hump-head, Ubangi Blockhead Cichlid
Origin: Ubangi River, DR Congo
Steatocranus ubanguiensis is collected from the Ubangi River, which forms the border between the DR Congo and Central African Republic and is one of the Congo's major northern tributaries. It is a large and imposing Steatocranus, reaching up to 11 cm, with a bold spotted-and-barred pattern on a dark grey-brown base that distinguishes it from other genus members.
Extremely rarely imported, S. ubanguiensis is a trophy acquisition for the serious Congo biotope aquarist. Its care requirements are similar to S. casuarius — strong current, rocky structure, and cave-spawning pair bond — but its greater size and relative aggression mean a 120 L tank minimum is necessary.
Well-oxygenated, moderately hard water at pH 6.0–7.5 replicates the Ubangi's chemistry. Provide large boulders, smooth rocks, and PVC caves to give the pair territory and spawning options.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate to moderately hard (GH 5–18, KH 3–12); strong water movement essential. Tank: 120 L minimum; large boulders, PVC cave hides, and strong powerhead current. Feeding: Large cichlid pellets, frozen meaty foods, earthworms, and occasional whole invertebrates. Breeding: Cave-spawner; very strong pair bond and parental aggression towards all intruders. Compatibility: Extremely limited — fast-moving upper-level fish only; species tank preferred.
