Apistogramma steindachneri
Also known as: Steindachner's Apisto, Steindachneri Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma steindachneri is one of the most widely kept and bred Apistogramma species, collected from Guyana and neighbouring regions. It is notably hardy compared to many congeners and adapts to a broader range of water conditions, making it a recommended first Apistogramma for new hobbyists. Males grow somewhat larger than average for the genus.
Water: 23-29°C, pH 5.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4-12) tolerated. Tank: 80L minimum given larger size; sand substrate, caves, moderate planting. Feeding: omnivore — accepts a wide range of live/frozen and quality dry foods. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; harem setup (1M:2-3F) recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community with medium tetras, Corydoras; avoid very small fish.
