Steindachneridion scriptum
Also known as: Steindachnerian Catfish, Surubim do Paraná
Origin: Paraná & Uruguay basins
Steindachneridion scriptum is native to the Paraná and Uruguay river drainages of southern South America and is one of the few large pimelodids adapted to cooler subtropical conditions. Its pale body bearing elaborate dark reticulations and saddle marks resembles fine pen-work, giving rise to its specific epithet scriptum (written).
In the wild this species inhabits large river channels with strong currents over rocky and sandy substrates. In the aquarium it requires cool, well-oxygenated water with high flow — standard tropical temperatures will shorten its lifespan considerably. A very large tank with robust filtration is essential.
The Steindachnerian Catfish is extremely rarely imported and is primarily of interest to advanced catfish specialists. It is legally protected in parts of its range and captive specimens must be sourced responsibly.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate to slightly hard; high oxygen, strong flow. Tank: Minimum 1000L; rocky décor and strong current zones; powerful filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; large prawns, fish fillets, whole fish; robust appetite. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Aggressive; large robust cool-water South American species only.
