Guianacara stergiosi
Also known as: Stergiosi Cichlid, Ventuari Guianacara
Origin: Venezuela (Ventuari, upper Orinoco)
Guianacara stergiosi was described from the Ventuari river and upper Orinoco drainage system of Venezuela. It is arguably the most colourful species in the genus, with dominant males displaying iridescent turquoise-green cheek scaling and vivid red-orange pelvic fins that intensify during courtship and spawning. The species inhabits clear-to-slightly-tannin-stained, sandy and rocky river margins at warm temperatures. A cave spawner with biparental brood care, it is moderately territorial during breeding but otherwise peaceful. In the aquarium it appreciates rocky caves, open sandy areas for foraging, warm soft water, and a varied protein-rich diet. Its striking colouration makes it a rewarding display species. Suitable for large South American cichlid communities with robust but non-aggressive companions.
Water: Soft; pH 5.0–6.8, temperature 25–29 °C, well-oxygenated. Tank: 150 L+; rock caves, open sand, plants optional. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, mysis, live foods optional. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; both parents defend territory. Compatibility: Moderate; keep with robust, similarly sized calm South American fish.
