Acipenser ruthenus
Also known as: Sterlet, Sterlet Sturgeon, Dwarf Sturgeon
Origin: Europe and Central Asia
Acipenser ruthenus is native to large river systems of Russia and Central Europe including the Volga, Danube, and Ob, where it inhabits cold, highly oxygenated rivers with gravel or sandy bottoms. It is the smallest sturgeon species typically available in the hobby and the one most suited to aquarium keeping. It uses a sensitive rostrum lined with electroreceptors and taste buds to detect invertebrates buried in substrate. It is a continuous bottom prober that requires smooth substrate, no sharp decor, and very high oxygen levels. It does not compete well with aggressive tankmates for food. Captive-bred specimens only.
Water: 5-20°C, pH 7.0-8.0, moderately to very hard; very high dissolved oxygen; cold and clean essential. Tank: Minimum 1000L; smooth gravel or sand bottom; strong circulation; no sharp ornaments. Feeding: Carnivore; sinking sturgeon pellets, live/frozen bloodworms, earthworms; bottom feeder — no surface foods. Breeding: Spring spawner over gravel in strong current; specialist facility required. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with other cold-water species; avoid aggressive fish that may prevent feeding.
