Acipenser ruthenus
Origin: Eastern Europe (captive bred)
The Sterlet Sturgeon is a prized coldwater pond species whose sleek, scute-armored body and graceful, gliding movement captivate pond keepers across Europe. This small-grade fish is already showing the distinctive row of scutes and the upturned heterocercal tail that define the sturgeon family. A bottom-oriented feeder with a projecting rostrum and barbels for sensing food, it requires a large pond with excellent water quality and high dissolved oxygen levels.
Requires a minimum 4,000 L pond with strong filtration and high oxygenation. Feed specialist sinking sturgeon pellets 2–3 times daily; supplement with earthworms and frozen bloodworm. Avoid very high summer temperatures — ensure pond depth allows cool retreats. Never house with aggressive pond fish. A sand or fine gravel bottom allows natural feeding behavior. Do not keep in small ornamental ponds.
