Hemiancistrus sp. (L023)
Also known as: Sternella Pleco, L023 Pleco, Reticulated Pleco
Origin: Rio Meta, Colombia
The Sternella Pleco (L023) is a graceful loricariid from the Rio Meta system of Colombia, named for the fine star-like reticulated network of pale lines crossing its dark brown body. This subtle but intricate patterning makes it a favourite among connoisseurs who appreciate the more understated beauty of the Loricariidae family.
L023 requires pristine water quality with warm temperatures and moderate to strong flow. It is an omnivore that feeds on algae, biofilm, driftwood, and supplemental prepared foods. A varied diet including algae wafers, wood-grazing pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich frozen foods keeps specimens in peak condition.
This species is moderately peaceful and coexists well with most community fish. It can be mildly territorial around caves but rarely causes significant conflict. Provide multiple hiding spots and a well-planted or heavily decorated aquarium to help it feel secure and display its best colouration.
Water: pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; pristine, warm water required. Tank: 120 L minimum; driftwood, smooth caves, moderate to strong water flow. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched veg, wood-grazing pellets, occasional bloodworm. Breeding: Cave spawner; infrequently bred; water quality and conditioning key triggers. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with most community species; mildly territorial over caves.
