Hemigrammus stictus
Also known as: Stictus Hemigrammus, Red-tailed Tetra
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Hemigrammus stictus is an infrequently imported Hemigrammus from the Amazon basin of Brazil, displaying a delicate, translucent body with fine dark body spots and a subtle reddish flush to the caudal fin in well-conditioned individuals. Its quiet elegance appeals to aquarists who appreciate subtlety over showiness in their planted tank inhabitants.
As a somewhat delicate species, H. stictus benefits from soft acidic water with good plant cover and stable parameters. It is peaceful towards all tankmates and forms relaxed, natural-looking schools in a well-maintained planted aquarium. Avoid boisterous or nippy companions that might stress or damage it.
Feeding should include quality micro-pellets, crushed flake, and regular offerings of small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro-worms to maintain peak condition. It is a rewarding species for the discerning planted tank aquarist.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 1–10, KH 0–5). Tank: 60 L minimum; densely planted, dark substrate, subdued lighting, gentle flow. Feeding: Micro-pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; soft acidic water; condition on live foods. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with small soft-water tetras, nano rasboras, corydoras, and shrimp.
