Stigmatochromis modestus
Also known as: Modestus Hap, Modest Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Despite its name, Stigmatochromis modestus is far from modest in appearance — breeding males develop a rich metallic blue across the body with subtle retained dark blotching creating an attractive two-tone effect. It is a medium-large haplochromine found across the open sandy and intermediate zone habitats of Lake Malawi, where it forages actively for invertebrates and small fish.
Compared to S. woodi, modestus is a slightly smaller and somewhat more slender fish, making it marginally easier to accommodate in a large home aquarium. It is an active mid-water swimmer that appreciates plenty of open space. The species is generally compatible with Peacocks and other medium-sized Haps, making it a good addition to a large mixed Hap and Peacock display tank.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate-sized broods. Females are grey-silver and cryptic. The species is intermittently available in the hobby and is considered a good beginner Hap for keepers stepping up from smaller cichlids.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; good filtration and regular water changes required. Tank: 350 L minimum; sandy substrate with open swimming space; some rocky structure for territory definition. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen mysis and krill; supplement spirulina; feed 2× daily in small portions. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; easy to breed in well-maintained aquaria. Compatibility: Good with Peacocks, utaka, and medium Haps; avoid small fish and overly aggressive species.
