Stigmatochromis woodi
Also known as: Wood's Cichlid, Woodi Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi
Stigmatochromis woodi is a large, robustly built haplochromine endemic to the shallower sandy bays and intermediate zones of Lake Malawi. Dominant males in breeding color are impressive: the entire body turns a rich metallic blue, and the pelvic fins develop a warm orange-red coloration that intensifies during courtship. The species has a stockier build than many Haps, giving it a powerful, athletic appearance in the aquarium.
This species is relatively rarely seen in the European trade despite its attractive coloration. In nature it is associated with open sandy habitats where it forages over substrate and performs elaborate spawning displays. In the aquarium it appreciates a large sandy area combined with some rocky structure for territory definition.
Stigmatochromis woodi is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females are silver-grey with faint markings. Males can be moderately aggressive toward similarly colored male Haps but are generally reasonable community fish when kept with appropriately sized tankmates. An excellent choice for the collector seeking larger, less common Malawi Haps.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; regular water changes; moderate to strong filtration. Tank: 400 L minimum with fine sandy substrate and scattered rocky structures; one male of this species per tank. Feeding: Carnivore pellets and frozen krill or mysis; supplement with spirulina for color; feed 2× daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; condition on high-protein diet before breeding attempts. Compatibility: Large Peacocks, utaka, and other Haps of 15 cm+; avoid small fish and aggressive mbuna.
