Stiphodon ornatus
Origin: Southeast Asia
Stiphodon ornatus, the Ornate Stiphodon Goby, is a small and spectacularly colored hillstream goby from fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams of Southeast Asia. Terminal males display electric blue, vivid orange, and contrasting black markings, making them among the most visually striking of all gobies. They feed primarily by rasping biofilm and microalgae from hard surfaces and require a mature aquarium well colonized with algae. Males are highly territorial with each other but peaceful toward dissimilar species.
Provide strong, well-oxygenated water flow over smooth stones and driftwood covered with natural biofilm. Tank must be fully cycled and mature — at least 6 months old is ideal. Supplement natural grazing with blanched vegetables and algae wafers if biofilm is insufficient. Keep only one male unless the tank is very large with many visual barriers. Excellent water quality is non-negotiable.
