Barbatula barbatula
Origin: Europe
The Stone Loach is a slender, well-camouflaged native European loach with a mottled brown and cream pattern that blends seamlessly with gravel and stones. It uses its six sensitive barbels to detect invertebrates, small crustaceans, and organic debris among substrate particles. Nocturnal by nature, it becomes more active at dusk and dawn. A beneficial and visually interesting species for naturalistic pond environments that mimics true European river ecology.
Provide a sandy or fine-gravel substrate for natural burrowing and foraging behavior. Strong filtration and well-oxygenated, cool water are essential — avoid temperatures above 22°C. Feed sinking tablets, frozen bloodworm, and Tubifex; will also scavenge naturally from organic substrate detritus. Best housed in ponds or large cool-water aquariums with other native European species.
