Danio strigosus
Also known as: Strigosus Danio
Origin: Myanmar (Ayeyarwady drainage)
Danio strigosus is a small, active danio from the Ayeyarwady drainage of Myanmar, where it inhabits clear hill streams and small rivers. The body is pale golden-silver with fine horizontal striping that becomes more distinct as the fish matures and conditions. It is closely related to several similar species and careful observation of stripe pattern and body proportions is needed for confident identification. In the aquarium it behaves exactly as other small danios: an energetic, peaceful schooler that spends most of its time in the midwater. A gentle current, fine sand substrate, and scattered planting suit it well. It is unfussy about diet and accepts most small prepared and frozen foods. Groups of eight or more produce the most natural and impressive schooling displays.
Water: Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–12; moderate flow with strong aeration. Tank: 45 L minimum; fine sand, sparse pebbles, planted margins; secure lid required. Feeding: Flake, nano-pellet, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; spawning over Java moss or fine mops in a separate tank with slightly warmer water. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similarly sized community fish; groups of 8+ strongly recommended.
