Pristobrycon striolatus
Also known as: Striolatus Pristobrycon, Striped Pristobrycon
Origin: Orinoco and Amazon basins, South America
Pristobrycon striolatus is distributed across the Orinoco and Amazon drainages and is distinguished by fine horizontal striations along its flanks that are visible in well-conditioned specimens. Like other Pristobrycon, it occupies a dietary middle ground between strictly carnivorous and omnivorous feeding strategies.
It is more inclined to school than most piranha relatives, and a group of five or more individuals displays cohesive, natural behaviour. Less aggressive than Pygocentrus or Serrasalmus, it can be considered for careful mixed-Pristobrycon setups under the right conditions, though species-appropriate caution is always advised.
Piranha regulations may apply; verify local laws before purchase.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft to moderately soft; blackwater tannin supplementation recommended. Tank: Minimum 300L for a school of 5; driftwood and floating plant cover; secure lid. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet of fish fillet, invertebrates, quality pellets; accepts a broader range of foods than pure piranhas. Breeding: Group-spawning species; rarely documented in captivity. Compatibility: Best kept as species group; less aggressive but still requires careful management; verify local piranha restrictions.
