Desmopuntius johorensis
Also known as: Striped Barb, Line Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Borneo)
Desmopuntius johorensis (formerly Puntius johorensis) is found in the rivers and streams of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Its multiple bold horizontal dark stripes on a silvery-gold body make it one of the more distinctively patterned barbs in the hobby. It is an active schooling fish that can exhibit some chasing behaviour but is generally peaceful towards dissimilar species. Best displayed in groups of eight or more.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate (GH 5–15). Tank: 100 L minimum; planted with open mid-water swimming areas. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, micro-pellets, and frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive within group; keep in groups of 8+ to manage intraspecific chasing. Compatibility: Good with other medium-sized cyprinids, robust tetras, and catfish; avoid very small or timid species.
