Cambarus striatus
Also known as: Striped Crayfish, Lined Crayfish
Origin: Southeastern USA
Cambarus striatus is distributed across stream and pond habitats in the southeastern United States, and is readily distinguished from many congeners by the prominent dark longitudinal stripes running along its carapace and abdomen. These markings, combined with its warm olive-brown base colouration, give it a clean and attractive appearance in a natural-style species tank.
In aquaria, C. striatus adapts well to standard temperate freshwater conditions and is an active, curious species that investigates its surroundings continuously. It is a competent digger and will burrow into soft substrate; a fine sand or gravel bottom allows it to express natural behaviour. Like most Cambarus, it is best kept as a solo specimen.
This species is appreciated by keepers who maintain native North American biotope aquaria, alongside other southeastern stream organisms such as darters, shiners, and aquatic plants like Sagittaria and Vallisneria (which it will unfortunately consume).
Water: 16–24°C, pH 6.8–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; clean, well-oxygenated stream-style water. Tank: minimum 80 L, fine to medium gravel, flat rocks, caves; avoid plants. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, leaf litter, blanched vegetables, occasional invertebrate protein. Breeding: seasonal; cooler winter temperatures trigger conditioning and spring breeding. Compatibility: territorial — keep alone; compatible with robust fast upper-column native fish.
