Trichopsis vittata
Also known as: Croaking Gourami, Striped Croaking Gourami
Origin: Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, Southeast Asia
Trichopsis vittata, the striped croaking gourami, is larger and more robustly built than its close relative T. pumila. It is widely distributed across the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, where it inhabits densely vegetated ponds, ditches, and slow streams. Two distinct dark lateral stripes run the length of the body, making it easy to identify.
Like other Trichopsis, T. vittata produces audible sounds by vibrating its modified pectoral fins — audible even outside the aquarium in quiet conditions. Males can be slightly territorial during spawning periods but are generally peaceful in a well-planted community setup. They build bubble nests anchored to aquatic vegetation.
T. vittata is one of the hardier labyrinth fish and adapts to a broader range of water conditions than many of its relatives, making it an accessible species for beginners interested in labyrinth fish beyond common gouramis and bettas.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard — adaptable and tolerant of typical tap water. Tank: 40–50 L with dense vegetation and floating plants; gentle filtration; tight lid. Feeding: small live and frozen foods; accepts pellets and flake food readily. Breeding: bubble nester; male guards nest; fairly easy to breed in a conditioned pair. Compatibility: peaceful community fish; suitable with similarly sized Southeast Asian species.
