Meiacanthus grammistes
Origin: Western Pacific
The Striped Fang Blenny displays bold black and white longitudinal stripes along its entire body and possesses venomous canine teeth it uses exclusively in defense when swallowed or bitten. Despite this potent deterrent it is a peaceful community member that poses no threat to tank mates under normal circumstances. Multiple species of fish across different families mimic its warning coloration, testifying to the effectiveness of its defensive adaptations. An interesting and hardy marine community fish.
Feed a varied omnivorous diet of small frozen mysis, Artemia, copepods, and algae-based foods. Provide rockwork with suitable caves and perching spots. Generally peaceful; avoid housing with overly aggressive species that might provoke defensive biting. Reef-safe and compatible with corals and most invertebrates. Hardy and adaptable — a good choice for intermediate marine keepers.
