Eretmodus cyanostictus
Also known as: Striped Goby Cichlid, Cyanostictus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Eretmodus cyanostictus is the most widely distributed of the goby cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, inhabiting the surge zone of the rocky shoreline. Its stout, goby-like body with blue spots and stripes is immediately recognisable. A biparental mouthbrooder that forms lasting monogamous pairs, it requires specialised conditions and is a rewarding challenge for experienced fishkeepers.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high current and oxygenation critical. Tank: 100L+; powerful powerhead creating surge-like flow; live algae coverage on rocks preferred. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake, algae wafer, nori; grazes algae continuously in nature. Behaviour: Monogamous pair with alternating mouthbrooding; males and females pass fry between themselves. Compatibility: Tanganicodus irsacae, Spathodus erythrodon; avoid fast or aggressive tankmates.
