Megalechis thoracata
Origin: Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana (Amazon and Orinoco basins)
Megalechis thoracata is a widespread callichthyid catfish from the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, resembling a slender Hoplosternum and exhibiting identical bubble-nest building behavior. Exceptionally hardy, it tolerates a wide range of water conditions and can even survive brief aerial exposure through intestinal air breathing. An active, sociable species that does best in groups and makes an excellent community fish when paired with robust medium-to-large tank mates. Males construct bubble nests under floating plants before spawning.
Provide a well-planted tank with floating plants to support bubble-nest building. Feed sinking catfish pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, and blanched vegetables. Hardy enough for most community conditions but appreciates soft, slightly acidic water. Keep in small groups of 3 or more. Provide hiding spots among driftwood and caves. Jumper — use a tight-fitting lid.
