Aphyosemion striatum
Also known as: Striped Killifish, Red-striped Killifish, Striatum Killifish
Origin: Gabon
Aphyosemion striatum is one of the most beginner-friendly Aphyosemion, native to forest streams in Gabon. Males display vivid horizontal red stripes on a blue-green iridescent body, and the fins are edged in red and white. The species is one of the smaller Aphyosemion and does well in a 40 L planted tank. It is non-annual and can live two to three years with good care.
A. striatum is tolerant of a moderate range of water conditions, though soft, slightly acidic water produces the best colouration and breeding results. Spawning occurs on fine-leaved plants or a yarn mop, and eggs hatch after two to three weeks in damp peat. The species is peaceful and can be maintained in a quiet community of small, calm fish.
For newcomers to the killifish hobby looking for a colourful and manageable species beyond A. australe, A. striatum is an excellent choice. Its hardiness, striking striped pattern, and willingness to breed in a well-maintained aquarium have made it a staple recommendation from experienced killifish keepers.
Water: 20–24 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately soft water (GH 3–10). Tank: 40 L planted species or quiet community tank with spawning mop and secure lid. Feeding: Live and frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and quality flake; feed daily. Breeding: Collect spawning mop weekly; incubate eggs on damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; compatible with small tetras, rasboras, and nano species.
