Selenotoca multifasciata
Also known as: Striped Scat, Silver Scat, Banded Scat
Origin: Northern Australia, New Guinea
Selenotoca multifasciata is sometimes called the Silver Scat due to its bright silver base coloration with dark vertical stripes. Native to northern Australian and New Guinean estuaries, it inhabits similar mangrove and estuarine habitats to the Spotted Scat. Like its relative, it shifts toward higher salinity as it matures.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, specific gravity 1.005–1.020; adults benefit from higher salinity. Tank: 400 L minimum; open swimming space with robust brackish-compatible décor. Feeding: Voracious omnivore; flake, pellets, frozen foods, and vegetables all accepted readily. Behaviour: Active and somewhat boisterous; best kept in small groups of 3–5. Compatibility: Ideal tankmate for Moonyfish and Scatophagus argus in large brackish systems.
