Channa striata
Also known as: Striped Snakehead, Common Snakehead, Murrel
Origin: India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia
Channa striata is one of the most ecologically successful freshwater fish in Asia, abundant from Pakistan through the Indian subcontinent and across most of Southeast Asia. It grows rapidly and to a large size — specimens exceeding 90 cm are recorded from natural habitats. The body is grey-brown with large dark blotches along the flanks and a pattern of irregular dark bands on the head. Despite its plain colouration, adult fish develop a powerful, muscular silhouette that commands respect in any aquarium.
In the trade, small juveniles are occasionally available and are inexpensive, but buyers must plan for the full adult size from the outset. This is a species requiring 1000+ litre aquariums, exceptional filtration, and decades of commitment. It is well-documented as one of Asia's most important food fish and commands cultural significance across its range.
Breeding in home aquariums is impractical for most keepers. In the wild it builds a floating plant nest near the surface and both parents guard the fry aggressively, even attacking humans who approach too closely.
Water: 22–30 °C, pH 5.5–7.5, very tolerant; pristine water essential for large adults. Tank: 1000 L minimum; industrial filtration; reinforced secure lid. Feeding: Carnivore; large fish portions, whole prawns, earthworms; large pellets accepted. Breeding: Floating nest spawner with biparental care; impractical in home aquaria. Compatibility: Solitary only; highly aggressive to all other species.
