Fundulus lineolatus
Also known as: Striped Topminnow, Lined Topminnow
Origin: Southeastern USA
Fundulus lineolatus, the Striped Topminnow, is a slender, surface-oriented killifish from clear, vegetated streams and pools of the southeastern United States. The bold dark lateral stripe running the full length of the pale olive body is the species' most distinctive feature. Males develop more contrasting colouration during the breeding season, with subtle hints of golden or orange tones on the body.
F. lineolatus is a hardy, undemanding aquarium fish that thrives in a 60 L planted tank at moderate to warm temperatures. It is an omnivore that readily accepts a variety of foods, including flake, frozen invertebrates, and live prey. Spawning occurs on fine-leaved plants, and eggs hatch after 10–14 days. The species is peaceful and suitable for a native North American biotope aquarium.
This species is of interest to native fish keepers who appreciate the diversity of the North American Fundulus fauna beyond the widely available F. heteroclitus. Its clean, graphic striping provides a distinctive visual element in a naturalistic aquarium setup.
Water: 10–26 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, adaptable across a wide hardness range (GH 5–20). Tank: 60 L planted tank; outdoor tub suitable in temperate climates during summer. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm, and live invertebrates daily. Breeding: Spawns on fine plants; eggs hatch in 10–14 days; no parental care. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; avoid very small species.
