About

The Sulawesi Cardinal Shrimp is endemic to Lake Cardinal (Danau Towuti and associated lakes) in Sulawesi, Indonesia — one of the world's ancient lakes with millions of years of evolutionary isolation that have produced a uniquely specialised fauna. It is arguably the most visually spectacular dwarf shrimp in the freshwater hobby, displaying a deep crimson-red body adorned with precisely distributed brilliant white spots that create a jewel-like, almost surreal appearance.

The lakes of Sulawesi are ancient, stable, warm, and moderately alkaline — conditions completely opposite to the soft, acidic water preferred by Caridina cantonensis variants. The Cardinal Shrimp requires warm temperatures of 26–30 °C and a moderately alkaline pH of 7.5–8.5, along with specific mineral composition that reflects the unique ionic chemistry of its home lake. Standard tap water, RO water, and Caridina mineral salts are all unsuitable — specialised Sulawesi mineral supplements designed to replicate Lake Cardinal water chemistry are essential.

Due to its extreme habitat specialisation, the Cardinal Shrimp is strictly an advanced keeper's species. Even slight deviations from its precise parameters can cause rapid deterioration. However, for those willing to invest in proper equipment and preparation, it rewards its keeper with one of the most extraordinary living jewels available in the freshwater hobby.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

A dedicated Sulawesi shrimp aquarium of at least 30 litres is required. Use inert sand substrate — active buffering substrate is inappropriate and will incorrectly lower pH. Decorate with limestone rocks, coral fragments, and algae-covered surfaces which reflect the rocky lake environment. Keep lighting moderate to encourage algae growth on surfaces. A sponge filter provides gentle, safe filtration. Heaters must be reliable — temperature fluctuations are particularly dangerous for this species.

Water Parameters

Cardinal Shrimp require: pH 7.5–8.5, GH 4–10, KH 2–6, temperature 26–30 °C. Use reverse osmosis water remineralised exclusively with a purpose-made Sulawesi Lake Cardinal mineral supplement. Never use standard Caridina or Neocaridina mineral salts. Monitor parameters weekly with accurate test kits. Perform small (10%) water changes weekly using precisely matched, temperature-matched water.

Feeding

Cardinal Shrimp graze on periphyton, thin algae films, and fine organic particles that naturally coat rock and substrate surfaces in their native lake. In the aquarium, encourage algae growth by moderate lighting and minimal algae removal. Supplement very lightly with fine powder foods, spirulina powder, and biofilm-stimulating products. Overfeeding is a significant risk in these sensitive systems.

Tank Mates

Keep in a species-only Sulawesi biotope. No fish are appropriate. Other Sulawesi shrimp species such as Harlequin Shrimp (Caridina spinata) may be housed together.

Health and Breeding

Females carry small clutches of two to eight eggs for approximately three weeks. Baby shrimp are extremely small and delicate. A mature, stable tank with abundant periphyton is essential for juvenile survival. This species is particularly sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and any parameter fluctuation. Never use copper-containing products.
