About

The Sulawesi Rainbow Crab, typically referring to Parathelphusa convexa or allied Sulawesi potamid species, is one of the most brilliantly coloured freshwater crabs in existence. Native to Sulawesi's ancient rift lake systems — including Lakes Matano, Towuti, and Mahalona — these crabs display extraordinary colour combinations of deep blue, vivid orange, red, and cream, reflecting the unique evolutionary isolation of Sulawesi's lake fauna.

Like the Panther Crab (P. pantherina) from the same system, the Sulawesi Rainbow Crab requires the specific water chemistry of Sulawesi's ancient lakes: warm, alkaline, moderately hard water with stable parameters. These conditions differ markedly from standard freshwater aquaria, and Sulawesi mineral salt supplements are strongly recommended to achieve correct chemistry.

This species is fully aquatic, territorial, and will prey on shrimp and small fish. A species-only aquarium with multiple rocky caves and shelters is the ideal approach. It is an active, visually spectacular species that represents one of the pinnacles of freshwater crab keeping. Direct development means captive breeding is possible in well-maintained systems.

Care Guide

Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.8–8.5, GH 10–18, KH 4–12; Sulawesi mineral salts essential; stable alkaline parameters. Tank: minimum 60 L; rocky caves, fine substrate, Sulawesi-style decor; secure lid; strong filtration. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, mussel, blanched vegetables; feed every 1–2 days. Breeding: direct developer; females brood eggs; miniature fully aquatic juveniles; stable Sulawesi parameters required. Compatibility: species-only; will eat shrimp; territorial with conspecifics; provide multiple separate cave territories.
