Caridina profundicola
Also known as: Sulawesi Red Spots Shrimp, Red Spot Sulawesi Shrimp
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia
Caridina profundicola is among the most visually striking Sulawesi shrimp, bearing a rich dark brown to near-black body liberally dotted with bright red spots that glow under aquarium lighting. Originating from the deep zones of ancient Sulawesi lakes, this species is highly sensitive to water quality and requires precise management of the warm, mineral-rich, alkaline parameters that define its native environment. Not recommended for beginners.
Water: 27–30°C, pH 7.8–8.5, TDS 200–350, GH 8–15, KH 4–8; Sulawesi mineral salts required. Tank: minimum 30 L, bare-bottom or fine gravel, smooth rocks, minimal current. Feeding: biofilm is essential; supplement with powdered shrimp food and soft algae. Behaviour: peaceful and retiring; mostly active at substrate level. Compatibility: Sulawesi species-only; no fish; same-lake snails tolerated.
