Aulonocara maylandi
Also known as: Sulphurhead Peacock, Mayland's Peacock
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Aulonocara maylandi is endemic to Eccles Reef in Lake Malawi and is one of the smaller and less commonly kept peacock species. The bright yellow sulphur patch on the nape is unique among Aulonocara and makes it instantly identifiable. It is a somewhat shy species that benefits from plenty of cave retreats in the aquarium.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water essential. Tank: 200L minimum; provide caves and rockwork alongside sandy areas. Feeding: Small cichlid pellets, cyclops, frozen mysis; feed small amounts frequently. Behaviour: Shy and less aggressive than most Aulonocara; may be bullied by larger species. Compatibility: Best with gentle haps or other Aulonocara; avoid aggressive mbuna.
