Parosphromenus sumatranus
Also known as: Sumatran Licorice Gourami
Origin: Sumatra
Parosphromenus sumatranus is a small, attractively marked species from the peat swamp forests of Sumatra. Like other Parosphromenus species, it faces habitat pressure from deforestation and peatland drainage. It requires very soft, acidic water and a quiet, heavily planted environment to thrive in captivity.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 3.5–6.0, very soft blackwater conditions. Tank: minimum 30L species tank; peat filtration, leaf litter, and low light. Feeding: carnivore — live micro-invertebrates essential; will eventually accept frozen alternatives. Behaviour: peaceful and somewhat shy; males display to females in small territories. Compatibility: best in species-only or with very small, compatible blackwater species.
