Leucaspius delineatus
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
The Sunbleak is a diminutive, silvery European cyprinid that forms large, glittering schools near the pond surface, feeding on insects, zooplankton, and algae. Its iridescent blue-silver flanks catch sunlight beautifully, making it a living ornament for wildlife ponds. Naturally distributed in the lowland waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium, it is a genuinely native species that supports local biodiversity. Its small maximum size (8 cm) makes it ideal for ponds too small for goldfish or carp.
Introduce in groups of at least 6–10 for natural schooling behavior. Hardy and tolerant of a wide range of conditions from near-freezing to 22°C. Feed a mix of floating pond sticks, natural insect larvae, and algae. No special care required — one of the easiest pond fish. Suitable for wildlife ponds, bog gardens, and small natural ponds. Spawns readily on aquatic plants in spring.
