Sundadanio axelrodi
Also known as: Blue Axelrod's Rasbora Red Form, Red Sundadanio
Origin: Borneo, Sumatra
Sundadanio axelrodi is a remarkable nano cyprinid endemic to the peat swamps and blackwater streams of Borneo and Sumatra. The Red morph displays an intense red-orange body colouration overlaid with blue iridescent scales that flash brilliantly in schools. Males are more colourful than females and can be distinguished by slimmer build. The species is highly sensitive to water quality and chemistry: it demands very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water that replicates the peat swamp conditions of its origin. Leaf litter, driftwood, and Indian almond leaves should be used to lower pH and stain the water. A sponge filter and dark substrate are recommended. The Red morph is the most striking trade variant and is valued by nano enthusiasts and blackwater specialists alike. Feed exclusively on micro-foods.
Water: Temperature 22–28 °C, pH 4.0–6.5, GH 0–4; very soft, acidic blackwater with tannins essential. Tank: 20 L minimum; blackwater species tank; leaf litter, driftwood; dark substrate; sponge filter. Feeding: Baby brine shrimp, cyclops, micro-worm, and quality nano pellets; micro-foods only. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; acidic, soft water essential; spawns among fine roots and leaf litter. Compatibility: Species-only or with equally tiny, non-competitive blackwater nano fish.
