Apistogramma atahualpa
Also known as: Sunset Apisto, Atahualpa Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma atahualpa 'Sunset' originates from the Morona-Santiago region of northern Peru, where it inhabits slow-moving, tannin-stained forest streams. The common name 'Sunset' captures the male's extraordinary coloration — a wash of orange-gold across the entire flank, deepening to red at the fin margins, which becomes even more vivid during breeding.
Water: Soft and acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 24–28°C, low TDS. Tank: 60 L minimum with hiding spots, caves, and floating plants to diffuse lighting. Feeding: Live and frozen invertebrates preferred; supplement with high-quality micro-pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female is an attentive parent; soft water critical for egg development. Compatibility: Combine with calm mid-water schooling fish; avoid nippy or boisterous species.
