Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Sunset Blusher Angelfish, Sunset Angelfish, Sunset Blusher Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Sunset Blusher Angelfish combines two desirable traits: the xanthic/gold gene which produces warm orange-gold body tones, and the blusher gene which renders the operculum (gill cover) transparent to reveal the pinkish gill tissue beneath. The combination creates a fish that radiates warm tones — orange-gold body, amber fins, and rose-blushed cheeks — reminiscent of a tropical sunset.
This is a compound strain requiring careful selective breeding to maintain both traits reliably in offspring. Both the xanthic/gold and blusher genes are recessive, so breeding two sunset blushers together is the most reliable method of producing the same phenotype in young.
Sunset blushers are among the most visually warm and inviting of all angelfish morphs and are highly popular in the hobby. Their care requirements are intermediate, as the blusher trait requires excellent water quality to avoid highlighting gill problems.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.2, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; excellent water quality is critical — gill stress is visible through the transparent operculum. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; warm-toned lighting and dark backgrounds enhance the sunset colouration. Feeding: Colour-enhancing cichlid pellets with astaxanthin, frozen brine shrimp and bloodworm; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Both genes are recessive; pair two sunset blushers to produce the most consistent sunset blusher offspring. Compatibility: Suitable with peaceful medium-bodied community fish; avoid aggressive or boisterous species.
