Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Sunset Hi-Fin Platy, Hi-Fin Sunset Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Sunset Hi-Fin Platy combines two of the most popular platy traits — warm sunset colouration and a tall, sail-like hi-fin dorsal — into one attractive community fish. The body grades from golden yellow at the front to deep orange towards the tail, mirroring the colours of a tropical sunset.
Hi-fin platys carry the hi-fin mutation that causes the dorsal fin to grow significantly taller than in standard fish, creating an impressive silhouette. The trait is dominant and is reliably passed to offspring when hi-fin individuals are used in breeding.
This hardy, beginner-friendly fish thrives in a wide range of water parameters and is an excellent choice for a peaceful community aquarium.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; tolerates a wide range of hard, alkaline conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted community tank; moderate flow. Feeding: Quality flake, spirulina wafers, frozen Daphnia; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific livebearer; 20–80 fry every 4–6 weeks; provide planting for fry shelter. Compatibility: Ideal peaceful community fish; compatible with tetras, corydoras, gouramis.
