Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Sunset Mickey Mouse Platy, Mickey Mouse Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Sunset Mickey Mouse Platy combines two beloved platy traits: the warm golden-orange sunset colouration and the iconic Mickey Mouse spot pattern at the caudal peduncle — three black spots arranged in a silhouette recognisable to generations of aquarists. This variety has been a staple of the hobby since the mid-20th century.
Xiphophorus maculatus is one of the easiest livebearers to keep, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and accepting virtually any food offered. The Sunset Mickey Mouse variant maintains these excellent hardiness traits while offering charming aesthetic appeal.
Platies are ideal for community aquariums and coexist peacefully with virtually all non-aggressive fish. They are also one of the best beginner fish for learning livebearer husbandry.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; tolerant of a wide parameter range. Tank: 60 L minimum; plants and open swimming space; moderate filtration. Feeding: Omnivorous and accepts all foods; offer flake, pellets, vegetables, and occasional live/frozen food. Breeding: Very prolific livebearer; females drop 20–80 fry every 4–6 weeks; fry large enough to eat crushed flake. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; pairs well with tetras, barbs, corydoras, and other livebearers.
