Xiphophorus variatus
Also known as: Sunset Variatus Platy, Variable Platy (Sunset variety)
Origin: Captive-bred (wild origin: eastern Mexico)

This Sunset Variatus Platy is a captive-bred color variety of Xiphophorus variatus, the Variable Platy, native to eastern Mexico's Atlantic slope river drainages. The variatus form is distinguished from the common platy by its slightly elongated body, greater cool-water tolerance (down to 18°C), and variable, often more vibrant natural coloration. The Sunset variety is selectively bred for its warm orange and yellow tones.
Like all platies, this is one of the best beginner fish available. It is highly adaptable, accepts most foods readily, and breeds prolifically as a livebearer. The slightly cooler temperature tolerance of variatus makes it a good choice for tanks that run below the typical tropical range or for those keeping unheated aquariums in mild climates.
Sunset Variatus Platies are peaceful, social fish that mix well with a broad range of community species. They are active in the mid to upper water column and bring warm color movement to any planted or community setup. Regular broods of colorful fry are an added bonus for aquarists interested in livebearer breeding.
Males may chase females persistently — maintain a 2:1 female to male ratio to prevent stress on individual females.
Water Parameters: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 18–26°C, GH 10–25. Cool-water tolerant; ideal for unheated or lightly heated aquariums. Adapts to a wide range of water chemistry. Avoid soft, acidic conditions.
Tank Setup: 60 liters minimum for a small group. Provide open swimming space, dense planting for fry protection, and floating plants. Standard community aquarium setup is adequate. Good filtration and regular water changes.
Feeding: Omnivores that accept flake food, pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Spirulina content is beneficial. Feed twice daily in small amounts.
Tankmates: Compatible with virtually all peaceful community fish. Excellent with other livebearers, small tetras, barbs, corydoras, and gouramis. Keep 2+ females per male.
Breeding: Prolific livebearers. Fry are born free-swimming and fully formed. Dense planting protects fry. Fry accept finely crushed food from birth.
