Baryancistrus sp. L014
Also known as: Sunshine Pleco, L014, Gold Spot Pleco
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
Baryancistrus sp. L014, the Sunshine Pleco, is one of the most visually striking members of its genus, combining a warm golden-orange to amber body with a dense scattering of small dark spots and vivid orange-yellow fin margins. It originates from the rocky, fast-flowing sections of the Rio Tocantins in Brazil, where strong current, high oxygenation, and warm temperatures prevail. Its colour intensity is strongly influenced by diet and water conditions.
The Sunshine Pleco is a sizeable fish reaching up to 28 cm, requiring a well-filtered aquarium of at least 250 L with significant water movement. It grazes biofilm and algae from hard surfaces and should be provided with smooth rocks and driftwood. High-quality sinking foods — algae wafers, Repashy, and blanched vegetables — are essential for maintaining its vivid colouration.
Like other Baryancistrus, it can be territorial toward similarly coloured or similarly shaped plecos. It is best kept singly or with very dissimilar tankmates in a spacious setup that replicates the warm, turbulent Tocantins habitat.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and highly oxygenated; strong turbulent flow essential. Tank: Minimum 250 L; smooth rocks, slate ledges, and driftwood; no delicate plants. Feeding: Biofilm and algae grazer; supplement with sinking wafers, Repashy Soilent Green, blanched courgette, and occasional invertebrates. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; high temperatures and pristine water quality trigger spawning. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward similarly coloured plecos; peaceful with unrelated community fish.
