Caridina cantonensis var.
Also known as: Super Crystal Red Shrimp, SSS Crystal Red, Super Red Bee
Origin: Captive bred (Caridina cantonensis lineage)
The Super Crystal Red Shrimp represents the very top of the Crystal Red Shrimp grading system. SSS-grade specimens display an almost entirely white body with only the faintest traces of red remaining, representing many generations of selective breeding for maximum white coverage. The near-total white colouration is exceptionally difficult to achieve and maintain in a breeding colony.
Like all Crystal Red Shrimp, SSS-grade specimens require pristine soft, acidic water with near-zero carbonate hardness, maintained with RO filtration and active buffering substrate. However, top-grade specimens are often even more sensitive to parameter fluctuations than lower-grade Crystal Reds, making them the exclusive domain of highly experienced Caridina keepers.
SSS-grade Super Crystal Reds command significant premiums in the hobby and are sought by collectors worldwide. A tank of high-grade specimens is a showpiece of the invertebrate keeping art.
Water: 18–23°C, pH 5.8–6.6, GH 3–6, KH 0–2; RO water essential; TDS 100–150. Tank: minimum 20 L; active buffering substrate; sponge filter; mosses and low-light plants. Feeding: snowflake food, premium shrimp powders, algae wafers; minimal amounts only. Breeding: moderate; 15–25 eggs per clutch; white coverage varies in offspring; selective culling needed. Compatibility: Crystal Red/Black Caridina only; no fish; no Neocaridina.
