Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Super Red Dragon, SRD Flowerhorn, Red Dragon Flowerhorn
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Super Red Dragon (SRD) strain was developed through intensive selective breeding aimed at maximising red pigmentation across the entire body while reducing or eliminating black lateral markings. The result is a fish with an almost uniformly fiery red-orange body, a large prominent kok, and bold pearl scaling that adds dimension to the colour display.
The SRD lineage incorporates blood from the red-coloured cichlids of Central America, and breeders have refined it over many generations to stabilise the extreme colour expression. Top-grade specimens show vivid colour from juvenile stage, though full colour saturation typically develops between 6–12 months of age.
Care for the Super Red Dragon is identical to other Flowerhorn strains. High-quality food with natural carotenoids such as astaxanthin and canthaxanthin is essential to maintain and enhance the red colouration. Without adequate dietary support, colour will fade over time.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness; stable parameters critical — temperature swings cause stress and colour fading. Tank: 400L minimum; minimal décor; powerful filtration rated at 6–8× tank volume per hour. Feeding: High-protein colour-enhancing pellets; frozen krill, astaxanthin-rich foods; feed 2–3 times daily in controlled portions. Breeding: Males are larger with bigger kok; use a mesh divider for introductions; spawning occurs on smooth flat surfaces. Compatibility: Solitary only; aggressive towards all other fish without exception.
