Hypancistrus sp. L236
Also known as: Super White Platinum Zebra Pleco, L236, Platinum Zebra Pleco
Origin: Rio Tapajós, Brazil
Hypancistrus sp. L236, the Super White Platinum Zebra Pleco, is a spectacular high-contrast variant of the striped Hypancistrus group from the Rio Tapajós in Brazil. Unlike the bold black-on-white of the L046 Zebra Pleco, the L236 displays an exceptionally pale, near-platinum white ground colour with bold, crisp black stripes or spots, depending on the individual's ontogenetic pattern. It is one of the most visually striking and sought-after Hypancistrus in the hobby.
Care requirements mirror those of related Hypancistrus species: warm water (27–31°C — slightly warmer than many), clean conditions, moderate to strong flow, and a cave-rich aquarium. The Tapajós is a clearwater river with a somewhat different chemistry from the Xingu, and the L236 benefits from stable, moderate parameters rather than extreme acidity.
Breeding has been achieved in captivity and follows the standard Hypancistrus cave-spawning pattern. The L236 is a premium-priced species due to its relative rarity in captive breeding lines. Males are territorial toward each other and should each have their own cave.
Water: 27–31°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard; moderate to strong flow with high oxygenation. Tank: Minimum 80 L; PVC or clay caves (one per male), smooth rocks, driftwood. Feeding: Omnivore; bloodworms, brine shrimp, high-protein pellets, algae wafers, Repashy. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; stable warm high-temperature conditions key to successful spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with dissimilar community fish; males territorial toward each other.
