Actinopyga mauritiana
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Actinopyga mauritiana is a large, robust sea cucumber found on reef flats and sandy substrates across the Indo-Pacific. It processes enormous quantities of sand and detritus, significantly improving substrate aeration and water chemistry in well-established reef systems. Like all sea cucumbers it must be kept away from powerful pump intakes that could injure or kill it. Stable tank conditions are essential — evisceration triggered by sudden changes or stress releases toxic compounds that can crash a tank.
Place in a well-established reef with a deep sand bed and no powerful sump intakes near the main tank. Cover all pump intakes with fine mesh guards. Maintain pristine, stable water quality — sudden temperature, salinity, or pH shifts can trigger evisceration. No supplemental feeding required in a mature, nutrient-rich system. Do not handle unnecessarily. Monitor that the animal is moving and passing substrate normally.
