Moenkhausia surinamensis
Origin: Suriname and Guianas, South America
Moenkhausia surinamensis is a sleek, silver-bodied tetra from the rivers and forest streams of Suriname and the Guiana Shield, distinguished by a crisp dark lateral stripe that runs from the gill plate to the tail and a warm yellow tinge to the fins in breeding males. An energetic schooling fish that stays active throughout the day, it makes a lively and attractive addition to community tanks alongside similarly sized peaceful species.
Keep in groups of 6 or more for natural schooling behavior. Provide a well-filtered tank with moderate flow and some open swimming space. Feed a varied diet of quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen mysis, and Artemia. Tolerates a range of water conditions but prefers soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water. Plants and driftwood provide visual security.
