Potamotrygon cf. orbignyi 'Suriname'
Also known as: Suriname Stingray, Suriname Reticulate Ray
Origin: Suriname rivers
Potamotrygon cf. orbignyi 'Suriname' refers to reticulate stingray specimens imported from Suriname that are consistently characterised by denser, bolder reticulation with stronger orange-brown tones compared to typical P. orbignyi from the main Amazon system. Whether this represents a distinct undescribed taxon or merely a regional colour form of P. orbignyi is debated. In the aquarium it behaves identically to standard P. orbignyi: active, relatively diurnal, and one of the more visible potamotrygonids in a display setting. Its water quality requirements are as exacting as any stingray, with zero tolerance for ammonia and nitrite and a preference for soft, slightly acidic conditions. It is regularly bred in captivity in Europe and makes an excellent second ray for keepers who have mastered P. motoro.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderate (2–8 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite; 25–30% weekly water changes. Tank: Minimum 400L, fine sand, open wide base, efficient external filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawn, mussel, frozen bloodworm; a good and reliable feeder once acclimatised. Breeding: Viviparous; captive breeding well established; litters 3–8 pups. Compatibility: Large non-aggressive fish suitable; avoid species that nip or stress the ray.
