Micropterus notius
Also known as: Suwannee Bass
Origin: Suwannee and Ochlockonee river systems, Florida and Georgia
Micropterus notius is a localised and rarely kept bass endemic to the Suwannee and Ochlockonee river systems in Florida and southern Georgia. It is highly distinctive among the Micropterus by the brilliant turquoise-blue colouration on the cheeks, throat, and lower flanks — a feature absent in most other bass species. It inhabits rocky and spring-fed river sections with clear, slightly alkaline water and moderate current.
In the aquarium, Suwannee Bass are rare collector's specimens that require conditions replicating their Florida spring-run habitat: clear, warm, moderately alkaline water with good current and rocky substrate. They are aggressive toward tankmates and are best kept as solitary specimens or as a compatible pair in very large aquaria.
Their exceptional colouration and rarity in the hobby make them highly sought after by serious native fish collectors. Due to their restricted natural range, wild-caught specimens require appropriate permits in Florida, and captive-bred stock is preferred.
Water: 18–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness; spring-run conditions with good current. Tank: 600 L minimum; rocky substrate, flat limestone slabs, open swimming area. Feeding: Live crayfish, earthworms, live/frozen invertebrates; trains to large pellets with patience. Breeding: Gravel nest builder; male guards eggs — rare in captivity; large space and pair bonding needed. Compatibility: Solitary or in a bonded pair only; aggressive toward other species.
