Geophagus sveni
Also known as: Sveni Eartheater, Upper Paraná Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (upper Paraná drainage)
Geophagus sveni was described in 2010 from the upper Paraná river drainage of central Brazil, where it inhabits sandy-bottomed river stretches and seasonal flooded margins. It closely resembles G. brasiliensis but is distinguished by a different lateral spot pattern and slightly more elongated body. The species adapts to a wider range of water hardness than many eartheaters, making it accessible to hobbyists with moderately hard tap water. Like its congeners it is a delayed mouthbrooder and consistent sand sifter. It thrives in groups and should not be kept alone. Provide a deep, fine-sand substrate, minimal decor to allow free sifting, and moderate filtration. An undemanding and rewarding species for eartheater enthusiasts.
Water: Soft to moderately hard; pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28 °C. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sand, open floor space. Feeding: Sinking cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; group spawning; fry held 10–14 days. Compatibility: Excellent community fish with large tetras and peaceful cichlids.
