Parosphromenus paludicola
Also known as: Swamp Licorice Gourami
Origin: Southeast Asia
Parosphromenus paludicola is one of the less flamboyantly coloured Parosphromenus species but is nonetheless a fascinating miniature gourami from Southeast Asian peat swamp habitats. It is highly sensitive to water chemistry and thrives only in very soft, acidic conditions closely mimicking its natural blackwater environment.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 3.5–6.0, very soft blackwater; use peat or leaf litter. Tank: minimum 30L species tank; dark substrate, leaf litter, and dense planting. Feeding: carnivore — live micro-invertebrates critical; daphnia, nauplii, and micro worms. Behaviour: peaceful and shy; hides frequently in vegetation. Compatibility: species-only setup or with very small, gentle blackwater species.
